CHAPTER 11

Sheridan

The next morning, there is a definite tension in the air, and not the heated kind either. There are no intentional brushes against one another as we move around each other. In fact, it seems like Waylon is avoiding me.

“What are you doing?” He growls when he sees me reaching for the microwave.

“Making tea,” I answer, placing the mug filled with water on the turntable inside.

“For fuck’s sake, that’s not how you make tea.” He stomps toward me and snatches the cup out of the microwave, spilling water everywhere. “Fucking Americans,” he mutters under his breath as he grabs an electric kettle from the stovetop and begins to fill it with water.

“I only want one cup,” I begin to explain.

“It doesn’t matter. One cup or ten, never heat the water in the bloody microwave!”

His outburst makes me flinch. “I’m sorry,” I say before moving to sit down at the small kitchen table.

He places things in front of me – milk, sugar, cream, honey, a dish with lemon wedges, two white saucers with matching cups adorned with a simple gold band around the rim. There’s even a matching teapot which he fills with boiling water once its ready. It’s all very formal and seems to be a bit much for the one simple cup I wanted and yet, with every step he takes, he seems to relax.

“Thank you,” I murmur as I stir a sugar cube into my tea.

“Tea is serious business.”

“Obviously.” I blow on my tea, take a tentative sip, and then set the cup back down to let it cool. “Why do you hate Americans so much?”

“Because my father gave me this stupid fucking name,” he answers. “He loved country music and cowboys, but not my mother. He left her to raise me alone and ran back to America to the wife and son he left behind.”

His history isn’t entirely secret. It’s a well-known fact Waylon’s father was a wealthy Texas cattle rancher who came over to England and had a torrid affair with Waylon’s mother. It’s understandable why he would hate America and Americans.

“Do you talk to your half-brother?”

“Occasionally. I met Darian after our father died. I travelled all the way to Texas for absolutely nothing.” A humor-less laugh escapes his lips. “A part of me hoped my mum and I would finally be acknowledged in some way, but he left us with nothing. Again. I could have contested his will, taken Darian to court for half of his estate but why bother? I was already a celebrity, in the midst of filming the franchise that would make my career. I didn’t need the prick’s money, but I wanted my mum to have something. She deserved it. Darian took care of her and he reminds me of that whenever he calls for a brotherly chat.”

He picks up his cup and drains the rest of his tea before pushing up from his chair. “I’m headed to the studio. A car will pick you up later and we’ll meet for dinner.
